The liposuction treatment is use for removing excess fat from the body. Also called lipoplasty the procedure requires surgical operation to contour the part of the body that is out of shape or have excess amount of fat. This treatment is generally recommended for people who are unable to lose weight through controlled diet and physical exercise. Usually the body parts like upper arms, legs, tummy, waist, hips and thighs require the treatment of liposuction to get them into shape.

Who is it for?

It is generally ideal for people who are obese around some parts of the body. The requirement for an ideal candidate for liposuction is generally a person with good health and diet and a regular exercise routine. People finding it hard to get rid of extra 10 to 15 pounds even after a controlled diet and a good exercise routine are recommended for the liposuction treatment.

Excessively fat people are usually not advised to go for a liposuction treatment since the after effects can cause serious diseases like heart problems and even diabetes in such people. People under 18 or having problems with heart, lungs and diabetes are not good candidates for the process.

The Process

The surgical process uses a high vacuum attached to special probes called the cannula inserted into the fatty part of the body. The fat cells are sucked out creating a contour for the treated body part. This is the general process of a liposuction treatment.

There are many ways to perform liposuction and the choice of technique is based on the analysis of the affected area and ease of fat removal. The commonly used procedures for liposuction include the tumescent liposuction and the ultrasonic assisted liposuction technique.

The tumescent liposuction technique involves injecting local anesthesia to large volume of fat which allows the compartments of fat to become swollen. The surgical process is then carried out with canuula to easily remove the layers of fat. The local anesthesia is used to shrink the capillaries which minimize blood loss in a person. This process provides fewer skin irregularities and faster recovery.

The ultrasonic assisted liposuction uses ultrasound vibrations to burst the fat cell walls. This liquefies the fat which is sucked out easily. This can be a long process but is also beneficial in terms of less blood loss. It is usually used in elimination fibrous body fat like in the abdomen.

Recovery Period

The patient is asked to wear a compression garment after the surgery. It takes around two weeks to get back to normal routine. There is a moderate level of pain involved which can be controlled by appropriate medications. The treated area will either be swelled or bruised which can take about 2 weeks to become normal. The effects of the surgery can be seen after the healing period.

Side Effects

There can be minor to major complications in the liposuction process. Apart from the swelling, bruising and scarring the skin can develop allergic reactions and even infections in the punctured area. Often because of lying down for a long time after surgery clotting can be formed in the treated area. That is why it is recommended to move around after the process.
